The Art of the Chasen Whisk

Mastering the whisking technique is essential to fully bring out the finesse of matcha.

Use a quick M or W-shaped wrist motion, without pressing on the bottom of the bowl, to create a fine and even foam.

Start by dissolving the powder with a little lukewarm water before whisking more vigorously to avoid lumps.

After each use, simply rinse the chasen with clean water without soap, gently shake off excess water, then let it air dry, ideally on a stand, to preserve its shape and flexibility.

Questions about our accessories

Three elements are enough to make a matcha according to the rules of the art: a bowl (chawan), a bamboo whisk (chasen) and a measuring spoon (chashaku). Together, they allow you to obtain a smooth, lump-free and slightly foamy texture.

The bamboo whisk is specially designed to emulsify matcha powder with hot water. It incorporates air into the preparation to create a fine foam, which improves the texture and fully reveals the aromas.

A wide bowl facilitates whisk movement and makes preparation smoother. Its shape allows for beautiful emulsification and visual appreciation of the matcha's color before tasting.

The measuring spoon allows for precise measurement of matcha, usually 1 to 2 grams per bowl. It ensures a balanced and reproducible preparation.

Making perfect matcha in 4 steps

Our tips for making the best matchas

  • 🫖 Get your whisk ready

Before each use, pour a little hot water on your whisk to soften it.

This prolongs its lifespan and prevents it from wearing out too quickly.

  • 🥄 Adjust to your taste

Use 1 to 2g of matcha for 60 to 80ml of hot water, max 70-75°C.

Beyond that, you risk burning the powder and altering its taste.

  • 👩🏽‍🍳 Whisk like a pro

Use M or W motions with your whisk, not circular ones!

You're aiming for a foam, not pancake batter. And avoid touching the bottom of the bowl; your whisk will thank you.

  • 🥥 Mix it up

  • 🍵 Choose the right matcha

For a truly delicious result, start with quality matcha.

Opt for ceremonial grade matcha, which is finer, smoother, and easier to work with.

It's the ideal choice to start right... and never look back.
